Hotel Babylon

Mis-en-scene:
In this shot it clearly represents the different ethnicity between the two receptionists as the one on the left is very outgoing with her blonde hair and bright white suit unlike the one on the right who fades into the background with a darker suit. This shows the strong difference between ethnicity and how the English women is allowed to stand out whereas the other lady is not. This outlines that the lady on the right is portrayed as less important than the women on the left is.
Camera:
The camera is positioned in a certain way so that the women in the white suit can be center of attention. This allows the audience to acknowledge her ethnicity and due to all attention on her everyone else who may not be English is cast aside and is shown as a less important character. As you can see on the far right a black women is walking out of the scene, while the camera still concentrates on the women in the white suit. This shows the lack of interest that is shown on the black lady.
Editing:
It has been edited that there is more focus on the women in white whereas the women on the right is slightly faded showing her less importance and how the women in white is the one who should be center of attention.
Sound:
The use of digetic music allows us to figure out the situation and as the sound is quite and intense and dominating sound it gives the impression that the women is also a dominate character as the camera also zooms onto her face at the time.

Mis-en-scene:

Despite both men in the picture are dressed in suits and give the impression that they carry out a similar role the black man is still the one chosen to be ordered around by the lady in the white suit. So despite the way he is dressed, due to his ethnicity he is still ordered around more than others.
Camera:
The camera does not need to zoom in on his face so that the audience an identify what ethnicity he is, as from a middle camera shot it already appears obvious. The camera allows the audience to see his whole body which makes them wonder his position. However this is soon changed when he suddenly gets ordered what to do.
Editing:
The editing has been done so that is allows the audience to see the difference between how the two men are acting. For example the white man is sitting down in a slump way, more relaxed. However the black man is sitting crossed legged, hands together and back up right. This shows that due to his different ethnicity he has to do more things to impress and is unable to do such little things that white English men may be able to do.
Sound:
There is no added music into the background which could indicate his lack of importance and how he does not deserve any type of music and sound which can identify him as a person.

Editing - The camera is zoomed into the white immigrant workers face which symbolises importance and his status. Throughout the whole clip, the camera isn't zoomed into any of the black characters or any of the other characters with different ethnicities.

Camera - The zoom also goes into a close up shot at eyeline which shows the character staring into the camera, making the audience feel threatened.

Mise en scene - The character is also wearing a blazer which also shows how superior he is through how you would normally see people wearing blazers who are rich and important.

Sound - The music was attention grabbing and created tension for something bad was going to happen. This shows the stereotypes of how bad things always happen to black people relating to their history with slavery.

All these things show how stereotypes are being followed as the white person is shown as more important to the audience rather than the other ethnicities.

Editing - Parallel editing is present within the scene as the editor crosscuts over to the other immigrant who is in the corridor awaiting what is going to happen next. By using this editing technique, it means it gets the audience anxious for what is going to happen next and brings tension.

Camera - The camera is showing a master shot as it shows all the characters in that particular scene hurdled in the cupboard for safety. This goes with the stereotypes of how immigrants are always in fear of being kicked out of the country.

Mise en scene - The characters are all wearing red which represents danger. This goes with the stereotypes of how immigrants are all in fear of the danger of being caught somewhere they shouldn't be. On the other hand, the receptionist is in brightest red; showing how she is in greatest danger and she was the one who employed the immigrants in the first place. There is also characters in this scene wearing white, representing peace. This represents how immigrants bring peace and aren't there to harm and are the victims of this. This all brings sympathy towards the immigrants.

A: You have made some good observations, and most of you analysis is focussed on ethnicity.
T: Try to use TECHNICAL TERMS as much as possible – in P1, what is the shot? What is the name of the editing effect you describe? By teaching yourself from the tutorials on the blog, you will be able to use the terms more confidently.
Try to give detail in your examples – describe the music, etc
Push your analysis further – In P2, WHY are they dressed the same if they have different statuses? What is the programme saying about ethnicity?
Be really sure what you’re focussing on in EDITING; much of what you talk about is actually camera work.
